Airtabs on RV

Hello Jack,

I just wanted to share. I put your Airtabs on my lightweight Sonic Venture. Before Airtabs the trailer would be wobbling down the road, even with a weight distribution hitch. Our gas mileage was 10-15 mpg. Which is terrible for a 2005 Ford escape. We recently went to Cedar Crest NM from Eagle Nest NM, about 150 miles one way. I was pleasantly surprised at how great the handling was. The gas mileage also increased to an average of 15-18 MPG. I also put Airtabs on the back of the Escape. They are well worth the investment. Airtabs have made pulling my travel trailer a more pleasant experience and definitely not so tiring.

Thanks

Frank

AIRTAB® VORTEX GENERATORS; OVER 22 YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG

It’s true. Airtabs™ revolutionary wishbone shaped vortex generator came on the scene in 1998 and, despite the skeptics and the scoffers, has now been a fixture in the trucking and RV world for over twenty two years. Why?

“Airtabs™ work.”  A direct quote from a US fleet CEO during his CEO of the Year Award acceptance speech at the Mid America Trucking Show (MATS ) at Louisville KY several years ago. He equipped his tractors AND trailers with Airtabs(TM) and was very happy with their performance.

We have been imitated twice but these imitations do not match robust construction, quality materials and installation flexibility offered by Airtab®. During our history, several “better than sliced bread” fuel savings and drag reduction ideas have come and gone. The Sept.16 2020 edition of Transport Topics cites that Trailer Tail has ceased manufacturing operations.

The many reasons for Airtabs™ popularity are the simple install procedures, low cost and rapid ROI.  An Owner/Operator can equip tractor fairing, trailer and have enough left over for skirts for less than the cost of a single fill up. A long haul driver will recoup the investment in savings in less than two months. No other device on the market that can make that claim. Lightweight, maintenance free, durable, simple to install, no driver involvement, always “on” regardless of wind and weather and they will never make a bad wind condition worse for any driver.

Well Bugger Me They Work !!

Over the last 6 weeks we have been evaluating if these AirTabs work and we are pleased to report they gave fuel savings of around 2.92L per 100kms, we measured this on our regular run to Christchurch as we know this road and can almost set our watch’s by how long it takes and how much fuel we use, over past runs we would normally get to Amberley with 180-200kms towing range left on our last 2 trips with AirTabs we had 269 & 274kms left and battled heavy winds which leads me onto my next point as anybody that tows a box type trailer knows side winds are not your friend but I was pleasantly surprised at the difference these made, comfortable driving even 1 handed with gentle trailer movements rather than catching the gusts, the other thing I noticed was the trailer seemed very settled and not jittering around on normal towing,
We Highly recommend them to anybody that tows a box trailer or drives a box truck or tows a multi box unit,

AIRTABS: CALMING THE COSTLY WIND

Wind toppling big rig.jpgAirtabs save fuel. Airtabs have been doing so for over twenty years by reducing aero drag at the gap and trailer rear.
But Airtabs do much more. Airtabs fight the wind like no other aero device can. Wind is the one force on a truck that is always present, routinely ignored, yet unpredictable and often costly. Airtabs offer remarkable inexpensive passive vehicle stability improvements through airflow modification. Unlike skirts and tails, Airtabs calm the swirls that surround your truck and “smoothen the ride”, especially in gusty wind conditions. Airtabs will never make a bad wind situation worse for drivers.

How does better stability help?
Aside from better fuel economy, improved vehicle stability provides several gains in two key areas; maintenance and safety;

MAINTENANCE:
Reduced tire wear from fewer driver steering corrections and less trailer tire scrubbing. Reduced tire scrubbing also means less rolling resistance (less drag) and bonus fuel savings.
Better stability reduces steering gear and suspension wear and tear lowering maintenance costs.
Time between scheduled preventive maintenance in these two areas could be increased as well as predicted mean time between failures. (MTBFs)

SAFETY:
Reduced driver fatigue through better handling, especially in challenging driving conditions. Airtabs do not add to driver duty day or work load in any way.
Reduced wind induced lane excursions reducing accident potential, losses and insurance rates.
Reduced spray and marked improvement in driver mirror visibility in rain or snow. This improves safety for ALL road users.
Drag reduction at trailer rear reduces snow and road grime accumulation. Reflective conspicuity tape and low temp LED brake and running lights are less likely to be covered in snow. Less snow means less weight means extra fuel savings. Less road grime means improved corporate image and reduced cleaning costs.
Rather than adding handling problems like other large aerodynamic devices, Airtabs fight the wind, help the driver to stay on the road and add to any bottom line.

A Happy Customer

Before we had the Airtabs on our 30 ft Winnebago motor home, it was very difficult to drive. We got pulled side to side passing every 18 wheeler we passed and we could only reach 70 mph, with struggles. After we put on the Airtabs, we can now pass 18 wheelers with ease and not need to hold on to the steering wheel so tightly. We are far more comfortable driving now and can reach speeds of 80 with ease. We have also noticed a significant improvement in our gas mileage. Before, we had to fill up every 3 hours, now we can go a little over 4 hours without a fill up.
Thank you!
Michelle

Case study – Vortex generators on Semi-Trailer

This trial sought to further quantify the fuel efficiency benefit of an aftermarket device (Airtabs™) fitted to reduce aerodynamic drag. The trial was conducted for one semi-trailer running a regional line haul application in Perth.
The Green Truck Partnership is designed to be a forum to objectively evaluate the merits of clean vehicle technologies and fuels by heavy vehicle operators. This report discusses the second trial of vortex generating aerodynamic devices. The device was fitted to a curtain-sided semi-trailer in 2015 and monitored over six months and over 80,000 kilometres (baseline + trial).
